I am searching for any information about this man's family in Scotland (probably Abeerdeenshire area) before coming to NY & Charleston, SC.In the 1851 census in Scotland, he was living with his wife ( md 1-14-1846) Mary Isabella Robertson (b 9-8-1820), an infant dau Eliz., a brother William and a 2 year old named John, whom people often attribute as his son, but I am guessing he is the son of the brother William, since he stayed behind in Scotland, md (gEORGINA dONALDSON) and lived a long life there,
John and Mary Isabelle ended up in Charleston, SC where he, being a mason, worked on the Charleston Customs House.John caught yellow fever and died.Mary's family tried to talk her into coming back to Scotland, but she was able to support her 3 children (David Barclay, Elizabeth Lindsay, and Wm Robertson) by becoming a matron at the Charleston Orphan House. She apparently went to Bessemer, ALa (why/when?) since that is where she died, 3-9-1892
Mary's parents were John Robertson and Margaret Barclay. The grandmothers' maiden names were Cheyne and Crookshank.
I am particularly anxious to find the parentsand past lineage of the brothers John and Wm.It looks like his mother's name was Elizabeth, since an older woman is listed with him n the 1841 census.
