No they were not required to be polygamous and the Henriods were not. However, some of the single women that immigrated to Utah ended up with not a whole lot of choice. If they weren't young and pretty with a lot of suitors to choose from, their only choice was to become a plural wife or try to make it on their own which was next to impossible given the harsh frontier conditions. For some it was actually a good choice. Also, I believe that many of the immigrants were not even aware of polygamy until they arrived in Utah as the Church previously denied its existance. All I know is that my grandmother told me that "Aunt Kate" wanted nothing to do with it and went on to California.
