from Michael James Riordan's 1916 Family Genealogical Paper:
Daughter of Hermann Heinrich Herkenhoff and Catharina Maria Pötter, born at GELLENBECK, PARISH OF HAGEN, NEAR OSNABRUCK, HANOVER, GERMANY, February 28th 1803; baptized on March 2nd 1803, per copy of baptismal record; married May 16th, 1827: came to America June 4th 1836; died October 30th 1878 at the farm at Crescentville, Ohio, (where Theodore Spellmire now, 1916, lives), at the age of 75 years 9 months and 2 days; buried in St Bernard's cemetery Cincinnati, Ohio.
Further information identifies Catharina's mother as the daughter of Johann Hermann Pötter and Catharina Liesbeth Meyer zu Mecklendorf: baptized in parish church at Hagen, Hanover, Germany, May 13th 1770.
Catharina Herkenhoff married Gerard Heinrich Rietbrock who was the son ofJohann Heinrich Rietbrock and Catharina Maria Plogmann, born at HAGEN, AMTE IBURG LANDDROSTEI, OSNABRUCK, HANOVER. GERMANY, April 27th 1795; baptized in parish church April 29th 1796, as per extract from baptismal record made by the pastor of Hagen April 20th 1836, and copy of baptismal record, left for America, per notation on copy of baptismal record, April 21st 1836; landed at Baltimore, Maryland, as per A.H. Spellmire's letter of November 5th 1908, on June 4th 1836. Spellmire Document #2; went by wagon and canal to Cincinnati, Ohio, settling at Walnut Hills and remaining about seven years; in 1843 moved to Franklin County, Indiana, where he lived till about November, 1868 when he moved to the farm at Crescentville, Ohio; died at this farm on January 14th 1870, at 4:15 P.M. aged 75 years of malaria and liver trouble 1908; buried in St. Bernard's cemetery Cincinnati, Ohio.
It would appear that the name change from Rietbrock to Spellmeyer was made by Gerhard Heinrich. He is called in a copy of baptismal record "Gerhard Heinrich Rietbrock" and in copy of his marriage record he is called "Gerhard Heinrich Spellmeyer", and at his marriage to Catharina Elisabeth Herkenhoff on May 16th 1827, there were present, as witnesses, Franz Heinrich Spellmeyer and Maria Elisabeth Spellmeyer. The extract from the baptismal record given by the pastor of the Hagen church on April 20th 1836, calls him "Gerhard Henry Rietbrock or Spellmeyer".
This does not seem to explain the change, since A.H. Spellmire's grandfather's name appears everywhere except in the instance of the extract from the baptismal record by the pastor of Hagen on April 20th 1936, Johann Gerdt Heinrich Rietbrock, and in the extract mentioned, it appears as "Johann Heinrich Spellmeyer", which certainly was not a copy of the baptismal record. Besides his wife's name was Plogmann, not Spellmeyer.
The probability is that Gerhard Heinrich Rietbrock, who was 32 when he married Catharina Elisabeth Herkenhoff, and at whose marriage Spellmeyers appeared as witnesses, had been married earlier to a Spellmeyer who died, whence the name/
Would love to connect with and Herkenhoff descendents in either Germany or the US.
