I am a great-grandson of ALFRED JOHANNES LARSEN (1872-1924) who was the son of ASKILD LARSEN HERLAND. The family emigrated from Bergen to Chicago in two waves. In March 1881, Askild emigrated with his sons LARS SEVERIN (b. 1865) and BERNARD (b. 1868). In September 1881, Askild's wife CHARLOTTE made the trip with daughters SINE (b. 1866) and OVIDIA (b. 1870) and sons Alfred (by g-grandfather) and ANTON SEVERIN (b. 1874). Ovidia and Anton died before they married and have no descendants, but Lars, Bernard, and Sine probably did have children, I just can't find them.
I have never seen my g-grandfather's name listed as Herland since he immigrated, but that was indeed their name in Norway, and Alfred's siblings might have kept using it stateside.
