I have an old “Hersey Genealogical Tree”, which is dated 1895. The mailing tube that contains it says that it is from Francis C. Hersey, of South Boston, Mass., and was mailed to Dr. Taliaferro Clark, at 900 K Street N.W., Washington, DC.
My brother-in-law found this item in his mother’s home after her death. He knows no connection with the Hersey family, so it has no value to him. Since I dabble in genealogy, he asked me to look into the matter.
His mother was Eugenie (LeMerle) Riggs, daughter of Dr. Eugene LeMerle and Virginia Norris. She lived in Maryland, in the area that forms outskirts of Washington, D.C.
Along with the Genealogical Tree is a small autograph book, titled “Floral Album.” It belonged to Hattie (Hersey) Adams. Hattie’s obit is in the book, and indicates that she was the wife of Benjamin F. Adams, and that she died 11/20/1955. Interment was to be in Hinsdale, N.H. The book contains good wishes from friends and relatives dating from 1879 through 1883. One page, written many years later, reads as follows:
“Opposite side of this page was signed by “Willie” Green. Her name was William She lived on Green in Baltimore just across the street from medical college Green ran at right angles to that on which The college was located. Their house was on one corner, the college on the other. Mr. Hersey got a government job and came to Washington. Was in the Pension Office. Herseys lived next door to Greens in Balto. Willie married Wilbur Chelf (? Hard to read). Daddy told me thisJan 30, 1956 Eugenie LeMerle Riggs”
