Lane, Thanks so much for your replies and for the hint of "Hurtel."I have looked for Hertel/Hartel/Haertel.
I spent most of the day at the Vital Records ofc. in Jefferson City looking at records.I cannot find John Hertel/Eliz. Haar on the cenus 1900-10-20.I did find one family that is a possibility - more kids than supposed to be - and they show a child born in Ilinois.I find their son George and his family on the 1920.
I have checked Ellis Island where they are supposed to have entered and there are two John Hertels - one entered in 1892 and one in 1894.Our John is supposed to have entered in 1893. No wife match.
I went to MU checking the St. Louis City Directories. There are many more John Hertels as the years past I have at least 6 each year and hope to run across one address that we recognize.
My husband said his gm's sister was a twin and lived in Illinois and that means there were at least 3 kids on his GM side. This sister was married and lived just over the state line in Illinois.I think I am going to end up looking for Hertels in Ilinois and find they moved from there to St. Louis.
