My grand mother, Laura Hertzog Avery, was born in Joilet Illinois in the mid 1880's. Her father was James Hertzog and her mother was Minnie Fuller Hertzog. From what I understand, my grandmothers parents divorced when she was very young and she was raised by other Hertzog relitives. My father, the only sorce I had who could relate family history, died 20 years ago, befor I realy had an active interest in family history and I have no living sorce to verify any faimly storys. The things my father told me about our Hertzog line were: James Hertzog's faimly was from the Redding Pensylvainia area befor they moved to Illinois. James was the first in 4 generations of Americans to speak English. An older brother was held as a prisoner of war at AndersonVille prison durring the Civil war. When he returned home he was almost turned away by his mother because she dident recognize him in his emaciated condition. James Hertzog was of a Menonite or Amish extraction. The Hertzogs in Pensylvania were gun smiths. The Hertzogs owned and opperated a stone quarry in Joilet Ilinois in the mid, late 1800's. James's wife, Minnie Fuller was the sister or cousin of the modern dance pioneer, Loie Fuller. I would appriciate any verification of this information or additions.
