Hello Mary. Thanks to your starting me in the right genealogy direction, the last, several months have been most productive in my search. I returned last week from a 6-day trip to Indiana with excellent results. Briefly, I have found out that: my great-grandfather, Thomas Heslin, came to the US on the ship, Alhambra, leaving Dublin, Ireland in June, 1846 & arriving @ Castle Garden, NY. He began working in thye Erie-Wabash Canal & was a Canal Boat Captain, began farming, married Bridget Carney in 1859, was a well respected man & a successful farmer passing away in August, 1914 & is buried @ Mt. Hope Cemetary in Logansport, Indiana. On my trip, I was able to trace 6 generations back on my great-great-great grandmother's side & havew met my cousin who is the official genealogist of Cass County, Indiana(whata nice coincedence!!). In addition, I now know all the families of the 6 Thomas-Bridget Heslin children & have met my 4th cousin, Billy Maroney, on my great aunt's side. I was able to take 105 pictures & a 2-hour video camera recording & even found the 183rock building that served as a debarkation point where the passengers&crew finushed their trip on the canal in Logansport. I must have come back to California with at least 20 pounds of clippings, 1880's directories, historical cards etc. etc. etc.. The only missing link is Thomas Heslin's Irish roots........I believe he came from County Mayo or Westmeath///could have been 1 of the 12 Leitrum Heslin sons......could use some help there. In the copy of his last will & testament, he ststed that " the sum of $50.00 be set aside to the parish priest at Carellton???/Westmeath for masses to be said for his soul." Main thing was to personally thank-you Mary for all your help in getting me started (with great-uncle Tommy's WW1 Draft Card back in June).Tom Heslin.
