(Amelia) Bertha Hiles, b 1898 in NSW Australia, apparently died back there in 1974. She married a Bertie Fieldhouse. They were living in the UK "between the wars", family say. They had at least one child, a son called John, who lived at times in Aus and definitely later ( ? late 1970s > , after his Mum died), in the UK.
There's a possible match for Bertie Fieldhouse in the Aus records. He's a sailor (steward). His initials are A C Fieldhouse and ships' records state he was born in London. (No Aus-based Fieldhouses seem to match.)
We've found: Albert Charles Fieldhouse, reg birth June quarter 1894 Pancras, bapt Clapton London 1895, the same day as his sister Adelaide Winifred. Parents Henry George and Emma. Henry is a Steward. Henry, Emma and family are on the 1901 London census living in West Ham, north-east London.
Fly in the ointment: this Albert may have married in 1919, to Florence Garrett, West Ham, and I don't see a death or divorce. . . .
The Bertha marriage may have been de facto?
Many thanks for any suggestions on where I go next.
