Hi Nancy,
I agree with everything you have except that Ira, I think, was the brother of Elizabeth, Ellen, Peter and Hannah Hilligass.I know that Benjamin Sr paid for the burial for Ira but again I figured that since mom and dad were both dead that he just assumed the responsibiulity of burying him. There was an Ira on the 1850 Pike Co., IL census as a laborer, Peter and his wife Mary, who I believe was his brother, were also on the Pike Co 1850 census. Also on the 1850 census for Morgan Co. with my Elizabeth Hilligass Taylor's mother, Elizabeth Hilligass was an I. Hilligass.E. Hilligass and I. Hilligass were living with (Elizabeth's) daughter Ellen Hilligass Ayers and her husband, Isaac. Both I. & Ira are the same age on the 1850 census'.After checking the dates of the 2 census' Pike Co, if I remember correctly, was done a few months after Morgan Co.'s census. So I was presuming that he had gone back to Pike and gotten work.James, their presumed father, died in 1842.My 3rd g grandmother, Elizabeth, married Spencer Taylor in 1842. It gets confusing sometimes with 4th ggrandmother and 3rd ggrandmother having the same first name.Elizabeth Hilligass (4th gg) withdrew from the Baptist Chirch in Jacksonville in 1858 and I have never found anything else about her.Possibly she withdrew and died or went to live with her son Peter.Peter was in the Civil War and left Pike Co.
I have the following children for Benjamin Sr. and Rachel:
Johnb. 1827 d. 1830 bur. East Cem
Jamesb. 1831 d. 1848 bur. East Cem
Eliasb. 1833 Ohio
Catherine M. b. 1834 NY m. Edward Sperry
Clarissa b. 1834 d. Jan 1885 m. Burton Brown
Benjamin Jr.
Their is a tombstone for John and James near Benjamin Sr. with those dates on it.James probably did die in Jacksonville in 1848 but I wonder if they didn't just put John's name on the stone so he would be there in spirit or for the family.I didn't think that Benjamin was in Morgan Co as early as 1830 and haven't found him on any of the census' prior to 1850.But then as I said there was a Mary Hilligass who was married in Morgan Co in 1827?-1830 and maybe Benjamin & his family were staying with her and her husband.I found the marriage in an old JAGHS magazine and I'll have to go through them and find who she married again.I don't remember seeing the marriage in the Book of Marriages that JAGHS assembled.
Have you any info on the brother's of Benjamin Sr?I don't know why but it seemed that there were 2 males who were about the age of my 4th g grandfather, James except their name's weren't James.I think, Petrus was one of them and the other was Alender.I wonder if maybe his middle name was James and his first name was one of these two.
I did find a James Hilegess in Huron Twp., Huron Co., Ohio on the 1830 census index. One of these days I'm going to try to get a copy and see if the sexes and ages match up with what I have on the Pike Co, IL census of 1840.Both James and Benjamin Sr. were supposed to have children born in NY, PA & OH.They could have been moving westward together as a group or large family.Just some ramblings and thoughts.I wish I could find tyhe answers........
