Jacob, Mary and a couple of the adult children came into the US 1742-ish through Philadelphia, long before Ellis Island. There were a total of 13 children. If you do a search on the internet I think the ship and it's registry may still be accessible. The name changed when they settled in South Jersey. My guess it that it was changed to it sound more English. That's a good thing for any Hitchner researchers. Every Hitchner traces back to Jacob. Jacob and Mary are buried at Friesburg NJ.
