My Murphy family folklore includes an Elizabeth Hitchner, born 16 June 1780 in New Jersey. She married Samuel Murphy (born 2 June 1774 in Salem county NJ, son of William Murphy & Phebe Sherry) in New Jersey and they had 11 children. They moved to Franklin county Indiana about 1818 (the last one or two children were probably born in Indiana).
Now for my mysteries:
Samuel Murphy (died 15 June 1862) appears to be buried alone in the Bath Springs Cemetery in Union county IN; there is no sign of a wife.
The family legend states that Elizabeth (Hitchner) Murphy died 23 Jan 1857 while visiting family in New Jersey, and is buried in the Waretown (or Daretown?) Presbyterian Cemetery.
I'm beginning to suspect that my Elizabeth Hitchner may be one and the same as the Elizabeth Hitchner born 4 May 1780 in Salem county NJ to Jacob & Elizabeth Hitchner.Perhaps the 16 June date from my family tradition is a baptism date rather than a birth date?
Can anyone shed additional light on this?
