The following is from Stacy Jackson, History of Cameron, NY published as series of newspaper articles in the Canisteo Chronicle starting in November 1923.I will extract what census information there is from census records as I get time. The Brownell farm was in Canisteo until 1873 when the town line was moved putting it in Cameron.
William J. Brownell (37) who was born in this state about 1796, married in Connecticut, Mercy Earle who was born in this state about 1797. They settled on the Wilson Loghry farm on the Swale road, where they afterward resided. It is said he was constable in Cameron for a time. To them were born: Matilda (Joshua Jones (134)), Polly (David Osborn (175-A)), Dr. Hopkins (not married), George (Roxy Dolly)(Roxanna Dawley), Sarah Ann (John D. Welch), William Riley (Louise Butler (41)), Solomon (Lucinda Bovee (27)), Harriet (Nelson Hoag), Daniel (Mahala Jones (134-A)), Nancy (Andrew Roosa (203)) and James (Lydia Brockway).
William J. Brownell died in 1867, at his home on the Swale, and burial was in the Drake burying ground. His widow removed to Michigan where she died in 1868 or "69.
At the first town meeting in Cameron, Feb. 1823, James Brownell, brother of the above was elected constable and served as such for some years. He removed to Woodhull where he afterward resided.
