Hi, I think I may have stumbled upon your Irish ancestor in the search for my Irish roots. Below is a database entry in the Transportation database of the National Archives of Ireland. Go to the following website http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search01.htmlhttp://www.nationalarchives.ie/search01.html and do a search on "James Nowland". You will get the database record shown at the end of this message.
In essence, a Patrick Hobins living in Tullow, county Carlow (between 1818-1828) had taken in the wife of a James Nowland who had been "transported" to Australia on the ship Guilford in 1818.
I hope this may be of interest to you and let me know if you have any Nolan/Nowlans in your family trees.
