hello Philip i live in ireland and hobbins is still a very rare name. i'm just beginning to do a little research. my great-grandfather was hobbins, originally from a village called rathcabin, co. tipperery which is near the town of birr, co. offaly. he would have been born somewhere in the mid 1800s, i think. he was an r.i.c. policeman in co. kerry until his son joined the i.r.a., when he resigned. i'm pretty sure that the hobbinses in ireland were british settlers, maybe coming here as part of the occupying british army. i'd be very interested in any further info on the family in ireland. regards, brian.
