Actually, John Hoblit had 10 siblings. Michael and Catherine had another daughter who must have died in childhood.According to the Lutheran Church records of Rev. John William Weber of Greensburg, Westmoreland co, PA, [on microfilm #050075 from the LDS Family History Center] there was a daughter Magdalena born 25 Oct 1778, bapt 19 Feb 1779, to Michael Hablit and Anna Catherina.Gerhard Reineg & wife Elizabeth were godparents.I have never found any further mention of her, so I assume she died young.
Also shown is the birth of John, born 22 Mar 1781, bapt 28 Dec 1781, to Michael Hablitz and Catherina, his wife.Godparents were John Conrad and Maria, his wife.
And later:Joh: Wilhelm, born 20 May 1783, bapt 10 Aug 1783, to Michael Hablitz and Catharina, his wife.Godparents were Christopfel Haas and Eva his wife.
Still later:Christoph Samuel, born 8 Apr 1785, bapt 30 Oct 1786, to Michael Hablitz and Catharina his wife.Godparents were Georg Erik/Frik & ??.
Also:David, born 8 Apr 1788, bapt 28 Jun 1789, to Michael Hablitz and Catharina his wife.Godparents not given.
Does anyone know where I can find the birth records of the other children?Does anyone know anything about the godparents mentioned above, since they were often related to the parents? There's been a lot of research on later generations of this family, but to my knowledge no one has ever proven who Michael and/or Catherine's parents were.
I'm not even sure when Michael came over to America. There are several possibles, but no proof. There was a Michael Hublich [and Bernhardt Hublich] on the ship Pink John and William in 1732, but I doubt that our Michael was even born that early.
Then there was a Joh. Michael Habuzel [with 2 dots over the u] who was on the List of Foreigners who took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania [PA Archives, 2nd Series, Vol 17, p 459]--List of foreigners imported in the ship Chance from Rotterdam--Qualified 8 Aug 1764. Some have assumed that's our Michael [I've never seen him with the name JOHANNES Michael anywhere else] but I'm not convinced.Anybody have any pros or cons?
