I hope you have found more since your 2009 post or I am just going to add to the mystery.I have just been given a family bible with records filled outin about 1891 by Sarah Hodgdon Furber, daughter of Daniel and Mary J. Varney and sister to Franklin Pierce Hodgdon. The first name on each page(birth, marriage, death) is Daniel Hodgdon:
"Daniel Hodgdon, Born July 12th 1815" "Daniel Hodgdon and Mary J. Varney were married" "Daniel Hodgdon died Sept. 8th 1872"
VR of Barnstead record the marriage for Daniel and Mary Jane, daughter of Ira Varney and Mercy [Chamberlain]Varney, on 28 Sept 1850. Daughter Sarah was born 6 mo. later on 19 March 1851.This may explain why the marriage date was delicately omitted from the family bible.
The main conflict: the 1850 census shows Daniel Hodgdon born 1822! in Maine living with Ira Varney and soon to be bride.
I have a picture of the grave stone for Daniel Hodgdon, buried Riverside Ce., Alton NH that I thought was his father that shows relation ships:
"1797 Daniel Hodgdon 1887 1799 Eliza his wife 1890 1823 Mary A. their daughter 1857 1828 Charles E. Hodgdon1912 1834 S. Elizabeth his wife1870 1861 Ariadna their daughter 1880 1840 Caroline A. his wife1912"
Mary Jane Varney is buried in a different lot in this cemetery with her daughter Sarah A. [Hodgdon] Furber as "Mary J. Tasker (second marriage to Joseph Tasker) 1832-1902".I have not found Daniel Hodgdon's(died 1872 per bible)stone yet.
