Hello, I am looking for the parents of Rebecca Smith who married Samuel Hodges in New Jersey in 1777.She and Samuel were the grandparents of Betsey Holton Moody, whose son, Dwight L. Moody, was the noted 19th century evangelist. Rebecca is supposed to have been born about 1762 and her father is said to be Uriah Smith of Newark, New Jersey.I have not been able to locate a Uriah Smith of Newark, New Jersey. However, there is a Uriah Smith who lived in Hanover township, Morris Co., NJ in the middle 1700s.Uriah was the son of Peter and Rebecca Nichols Smith.According to a revolutionary war pension application completed by Rebecca Hodges when she was an old lady, she and Samuel Hodges were married in Hanover, New Jersey. Unfortunately, I have been able to find no evidence that Uriah Smith of Hanover, NJ had a daughter Rebecca. There is a church record showing that Uriah Smith married Abigail Allen in 1770, but this is 8 years after Rebecca was born. Now I am thinking that maybe Uriah had a previous wife and family before he married Abigail Allen.Uriah was supposedly born about 1734, making him 35 or 36 years old when he married Abigail Allen in 1770.He was certainly old enough to have been married before. It also seems promising that Rebecca Smith shared the same name as Uriah’s mother. Does anyone have more information about this family that might be helpful? It would great to hear from any other descendants of Rebecca and Samuel Hodges. The only things that make sense if Uriah is Rebecca’s father are that she was a daughter from a previous marriage or she was born out-of-wedlock.If this Uriah is not her father, maybe she is descended from an uncle or cousin with the same name.I hope someone will have more information to share. Thank you.
