Researching the family of James Archibald HODGSKIN (note the spelling!) born abt.1813 in Farnham, Surrey, England. In the Census of 1851 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Coast Guard Service based in Axmouth, Devon. With him was his Birmingham born 24 year old wife Louisa M.
On the 24th. April 1851, their first child was born in Axmouth, named Mary Louise. In the Census of 1881 she is recorded as being 29 years old, unmarried and living in Arundel Cottage in Holdenhurst, Hampshire with her sister Gertrude. Mary Louise died a spinster on the 10th. April 1892.
On the 22nd. June 1853, another child: Alice Selina Augusta was born in Sheerness, Kent. The birth was registered in the Sheppey Registration District, Kent in September 1853. At 21, she married Francis Davidson, 17 years her senior. He was a curate from Edgbaston in Warwick.The marriage was registered in September 1874 in the Stoneham Registration District, Southampton. Francis was the second son of Benjamin and Kate Davidsonfrom Birmingham. Francis had a brother, Edward, a sister, Julia, and a younger sister, Georgina. In the 1881 Census, Francis is the Vicar of Sholling in the Southampton district and they have a 5 year old son, Harold F. Davidson. Harold was born in 1876 in Hound, Hampshire which is where the Vicarage is located. Alice passed away on the 15th. February 1913.
On the 21st. November 1857, Gertrude Frances Hodgskin was born in Sheerness, Kent, a sister to Mary and Alice.
On the 12th. January 1866, James and Louisa had one more child, Archibald James Hodgskin. He was born in Woolston, Hampshire.Archibald died on the 9th. March 1869 at the age of 3.
On the 9th. April 1878, James Archibald Hodgskin passed away.
