WILLIAM & JOHN HODGKINSON, both Butler's Rangers, settled in Grantham Twp., Lincoln County, Ontario. John Hodgkinson was born ca. 1750 and died ca. 1832? He married lst to Mary Moore and according to our records had two sons: John born ca. 1774, no further information Samuel b. Feb. 23, 1777 or 1776.d. Dec. 10, 1802 Md. Mar.10, 1802 to Amy Grovier, b. Feb.10,1785 Children: John; Amy: Beriah; Mabel; Mary & Ellen. John Hodgkinson then married 2nd to Sarah Spencer, died Oct. 1826. Buried Nov.2, 1826 Sarah was the daughter of Robert & Sarah (Rice) Spencer. Children: Francis b. ca. 1790 Md. Sarah b. ca1788.: Robert b. Jan.16, 1799 d. May 17, 186l, Md. Christiana b. 1789 d. Sept.5, 1865. I have a third marriage to Hannah, but it is unproven. John Hodgkinson had Lots 38 & 39 in Thorold Twp in 1794. on land next to where Brock University now is, part of the City of St. Catharines. In 1791, John Hodgkinson is located on Lots 12, 13 & 14.Grantham Twp. His homestead was located on the north half of Lot 12, Conc. II, Grantham Twp. according to early documentation. John & his second wife, Sarah Spencer Hodgkinson are believed to have been buried in the Hodgkinson Burying Ground, God's Acre of Cemetery established by his brother William Hodgkinson on Lot 10, Conc. II Grantham Twp. Samuel Hodgkinson, James Jones & his wife Christiana (Folch) Jones, their son Samuel & his two wives etc. The Hodgkinson Family Burying Ground was moved to a King's Grant Plot ca. 1913-14 to Victoria Lawn Cemetery to make way for the Fourth Welland Canal (the present one).William Hodgkinson owned the land from Lakeshore Road to Linwell Road in Grantham Twp. and if you check out the 1876 Page's Atlas Map, you will see a cross at this location, which was William Hodgkinson's Land Grant.There are many Hodgkinson, Jones, Nickerson, McMullens buried there but when the graves were moved to Victoria Lawn Cemetery, only 7 tombstones remained. 79 graves were transferred, in total but there may have been more persons buried there. William Hodgkinson's stone states born Aug.12, 1751 died Feb.21, 1847.Mary, wife of William Hodgkinson, born Dec. 17, 1765 died Oct. 23, 1852 but it is no longer visible at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.
