Powell Hoff: Genealogy Data Entry: Born 13 Aug 1801 in Prince William Co.(near Manassas), VA. Moved about 1805, at age of 4, with his father, Jonathan Hoff (1775-1812) and mother, Elizabeth (Betsy) Duncan (1785 Penn. - 1839 Washington Co., OH) from VA down the Ohio River by flatboat with Susan Sophia Moffett Hoff, widow of Rev. Daniel Hoff, 3 of her sons & 4 dtrs and other Hoff & Dye family members to near Marietta, Washington Co, OH. They initially lived in Newport Tnshp, above the mouth of Cow Run, Washington Co., and then to Chesterhill, OH and later, Athens, OH. The father died in 1812 in Fearing Co, just north of Marietta, OH. The family lived in Sandhill, OH, a eastern suburb of Marietta, near Cow Run & the river. Washington Co was later subdivided into numerous other counties, including Morgan Co, where Chesterhill, OH is located. On 25 May 1824 he married Martha Brewster at her parent's home in Marietta. Her father was a Nathan Brewster and mother, Hannah Parker. Powell & Martha Hoff had 12 children: 1. Nancy Hoff Blanchard (B: 23 Mar 1825 in Wash'g Co., OH,Md:29 Apr 1847 Rochester, IL D: 27 Apr 1850 Princeville); 2. William Hoff (B: 13 Oct 1826 Wash'g Co, OH Md: 20 Mar 1851 Windsor, OH to Isabel Walker); 3. Prudence Hoff (B: 3 May 1828, Wash'g Co., OH D: 1847, age 19, unmd); D: 17 Jan 1904 Dallas Co., IA); 4. John H. Hoff (B: 01 Apr 1830 Wash'g. Co., OH, Md 11 Apr 1855 to Mary Ann Akins of Berrien Co., MI, D: 31 Mar 1909 Dallas Co, IA); 5. Marie Hoff Ellis (B: 10 Apr 1832 Chesterhill, OH); 6. Amos Hoff (B: 14 Feb 1824, Chesterhill, OH, D: 2 May 1906, Dallas Co., IA); 7. Sarah Ann Hoff Weaver(B: 25 Jan 1836 Wash'g Co., OH); 8. Nathan T. Hoff B: 23 Feb 1838, Washington Co., OH); 9. Powell Daniel Hoff (B: 12 Feb 1840 Athens, OH); 10. Martha Hoff (B: 17 Feb 1842, Athens, OH); 11. Nathaniel B. Hoff (B: 25 Jun 1844, Peoria, IL); 12. Charles P. Hoff (B: 2 May 1846 Rochester, IL D: Bozeman, MT). The family moved in ~1843 from Athens, OH to Rochester, IL (near Springfield) where land records show Powell bought 4,000 acres of farmland (for $125). He presumably sold-off this in parcels, and in ~1853 he moved to homestead property in Walnut Tnsp., Dallas Co., IA, near Des Moines, IA, where he farmed until he died on 6 May 1870, age 78 yrs, 8 mos & 23 days. His widow Martha lived on until 1892. Both are buried in the Hoff-Prarie Cem. 1 mile w. of Grimes, IA on Hwy 44 (so side of rd).
