AMOS HOFF is buried in the Hoff-Prarie Cem. in Dallas Co., IA. Who was he?He is thought to be the son of the REV. DANIEL HOFF and wife (#1) LAURA TITUS.From his worn headstone, his DOB was 6 May 1775 as his DOB;He died age 80 years and 20 days, with a DOD of 1885.
However, I note that the REv. DANIEL HOFF remarried SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT and they begat son JOHN F. HOFF/JONATHAN HOFF, who is credited in the Arnold Hovey documentation as ostensibly being born in “1775”.But that couldn’t be if AMOS HOFF was born the same year – unless the Rev. DANIEL HOFF (like many “reverends” of even today may hve had two wives going simultaneously). That could bring an entire new meaning to a ‘lay’ ministry! ?.So, since AMOS’s date is literally “chistled in stone” (his headstone) and done contemporarily noting his birth in 1775, and I have never seen firm documentation on the exact DOB of JOHNATHAN/JOHN F. HOFF, I am inclined to believe the AMOS data, and think that JOHN F. HOFF was, in fact, born later (perhaps 1776-77).Also, LAURA TITUS was without question the first wife of the Rev. DANIEL HOFF.Per the Hovey data, he had 3 sons by this woman, AMOS included.I have an actual copy of their marriage certificate from NJ dated 15 Sept 1769 (Curiously witnessed by a “CORNELIUS HOFF”, presumably an uncle, and a name-sake for one of their 3 sons, as well). So, I am quite sure about this marriage.I am less certain is when exactly he met and married SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT.It seems that it was likely in VA on or after 1775.LAURA may, in fact, have died in child birth in the last of the 3 sons she reportedly bore him; AMOS HOFF.SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT’s father was also a “Rev.”, a WILLIAM MOFFETT, (as noted in the obituary of her son, ENOCH HOFF (a slave catcher), who died in about 1820 in Ohio). But I believe that SUSAN would have had to have married DANIEL there in Northern Virginia sometime on or after ~1775, when AMOS was born to him and LAURA.
But, the dates seem to disturbingly overlap a bit:If AMOS HOFF was the last of the 3 sons of DANIEL and LAURA TITUS and born on 6 May 1775, of necessity, she would have had to be living as of 6 May 1775 when AMOS was born. Then, if JONATHAN/JOHN F. HOFF was also born in 1775, when exactly did LAURA die and DANIEL have time to romance and marry SUSAN and her give birth to “my” JONATHAN/JOHN F. HOFF all in 1775?You see my concern?Something isn’t right about all this.Given the “stonework” on AMOS, this is why I suspect that my JOHN F. HOFF (my3XG grandfather) was likely born a bit later.DANIEL may have known WILLIAM MOFFETT “professionally” as ‘fellow lay ministers’ in the same area (being elected by their ‘vestry’ for that task, and given the honoraria of “Rev.” in recognition of that role on Sundays, but during the week they were just farmers), and perhaps WILLIAM MOFFETT’s young daughter, SUSAN was “offered up” to DANIEL by her father who may have been impressed by the work of DANIEL and recognized the need/opportunity created by the untimely death of W#1 (perhaps in child-birth), and SUSAN was hustled-in to back-fill the vacancy and “comfort” grieving DANIEL.And, JOHN F./JONATHAN HOFF may have been the product of that “comfort”.The marriage could have been a very informal matter, perhaps with her father “officiating” in a “cottage affair”.All recorded matters in Prince William County were all “burned” during the Civil War (interestingly, by the Confederates, so the Union Forces couldn’t identify the land owners to confiscate their property and brand them ‘hangable’ traitors). So, unfortunately, there is no “official” documentation concerning any births/deaths/or marriages or other events that occurred during this Colonial time frame. Thus, unless a long-lost Hoff family Bible of the time, or some type of private documentation eventually turns up on Ancestry.com, we all may be left to ‘educated speculation” and guessing as to the exact events of this time period, which is what I’ve done.
But despite the tender age of his 3 young sons of DANIEL, via W#1 LAURA when she presumably died in Northern VA ~1775, I don’t find any nexus between SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT and any of these first 3 sons of DANIEL.I don’t think SUSAN ever raised them (as a step mother).I can’t tell what happened to them during the time after the presumed death of their mother, LAURA.So, I don’t know who raised them after the death of their mother.Itdoesn’t appear to be by their father, DANIEL.Given their youth, perhaps they were given to collateral TITUS Family members to raise (maybe shipped back to NJ), and they ’caught up’ with their remarried father at some point before he died there near Manassas (~1801), and their other ½ siblings later. It is hard to know for sure exactly what happened. But this is important in determining how it was that AMOS became acquainted/re-acquainted with POWELL HOFF and/or his father, JOHN F./JONATHAN HOFF in Washington Co., OH.It couldn’t be a coincidence that they all just happened to end up living near each other in Washington Co., OH, and/or later, AMOS ended up buried in the “family plot” in Dallas Co.There had to have been some continuity of contact and nexus between POWELL and AMOS for some long period of time, I feel.I find it unlikely that previously unknown to POWELL HOFF, AMOS would just have “showed up and died” in Iowa, and then the family just decided to then take him in, and “plant” him in a newly established family cemetery there.I just don’t know the particulars of the on-going nexus, and the nature of the inter-personal relationship between them.I am left to a certain amount of speculation an “educated guessing”, as I have done above.
I pretty well have all these “initialed” individuals noted on the various headstones in the cemetery properly identified. All that material is at home, however, so it will have to wait.I have been to the little cemetery about every trip back to DSM lately, and I have tried to document all of the stones there and who is planted beneath them and their parentage.Again, if you go to my posted lineage charts and just go down the various ‘legs’ of the various sons of POWELL HOFF and their listed off-spring,, you can match them up fairly well. Most all of them are grandchildren of POWELL & MARTHA, and are the children of their various sons (my ‘leg’ through JOHN H. HOFF being a noted exception, as all of them are planted in relatively nearby Waukee Cem., located just south of the City of Waukee).
I hope that the above analysis/speculation is of help or interest as to the identity of AMOS HOFF.
