The following data was located by Diane in Ohio State data:
"John Hoff and family was admitted to Infirmary May 7, 1857 by order of Trustees of Ames Township. Born in the state of Virginia 1806, age 51 years, habits temperate but rendered helpless by being fleshy. Has been a township Charge for six years, at present indolent and destitute. Adaline Hoff, his wife, age 35 years, born in the state of Ohio, habits temperate and industrious but wish to remain with her husband to take care of him and her children. William Hoff, son of the above, age 7 years, born in Athens County, state of Ohio, healthy. Wyatt Hoff, son of the above, age 3 years, born in Athens County, state of Ohio, healthy.Entered by order of the Directors: E. F. Brown, Supt. Mrs. Adaline Hoff and her two children left Infirmary Sept. 9, 1857 on her own account: John Hoff by his own accord left Infirmary Nov. 20, 1857. All being legally discharged by the board of Directors."
This original, contemporaneously entered calls into question the birth date of JOHN HARVEY HOFF, SR. of "1807", which was formerly and heretofore accepted without question (and repeated via internet postings) in numerous FTM data. His status as being "indolent and destitute" and a "Charge" of the Township is noted and most unfortunate. This lack of any strong local economic roots may have prompted the move to Dallas Co., IA sometime after 1860, when via census data he was still there in Ohio.
