On the 2nd Saturday of July, 1815, following the approval by the county commission, the township of Lawrence was formed and a meeting was held at the home of John Mitchell for the purpose of electing township officers. James Hoff was elected as one of 2 constables for the township. On April, 1816, a second election was held. 18 votes were cast. James Hoff was elected first "lister of taxable property".from: Andrews History of Marietta and Washington County
Story 1805 - Virginia to Ohio
"The James and Jane Hoff family with his mother, Susan Sophia Moffit Hoff and 3 brothers and 3 sisters moved from the Manassas, Virginia area in 1805 by flatboat. They settled in Washington County, Ohio -- near what is today Marietta. They initially lived in Fearing Township -- eventually farmed in Cow Run, east of Marietta. James' brother Jonathan and his two sons (Powell and John) stayed behind but, eventually, followed their move. Powell and his wife Martha Brewster moved to Athens and then to Rochester, Illinois, then on to Walnut Township, Dallas County, Iowa. "(From efcahill online family tree added 30 Mar 2010)
COMMENT BY JOHN SCOTT HOFF (7/22/2010)in missive to cousin Diane Long:
I read with obvious great interest the last paragraph of your letter (below) which noted/quoted that:“…James' brother Jonathan and his two sons (Powell and John) stayed behind but, eventually, followed their move.”
If this quote is from some contemporary, local and reliable historical source, that would seemingly be a dispositive proof that JONATHAN/JOHN F. HOFF (1775-1812) was, in fact, the father of the two Hoff boys (and not AMOS HOFF).
Do you know the source of the original quoted data?I hope that this is NOT just an unsupported conclusion of somebody (from now) merely relying on/repeating the Hovey data (which is what I’ve done) and/or making some conjecture or educated guess about why or how it was that JOHN HARVEY HOFF could have been born in VA in 1807 if the ENTIRE family (including JOHN F. & wife “BETSY” DUNCAN HOFF) had made the move to OH en mass in 1805.If this is NOT speculation that JOHN F. was the son of DANIEL HOFF and the two “Hoff Boys” were his sons, then this might be the possible definitive confirmation I have been searching for - for now over a decade to firmly establish the paternity of POWELL HOFF & brother JOHN HARVEY HOFF!Where did you find this entry, and what do you know (if anything) about who recorded it?I’d certainly like to contact them to see what/where the original information they repeated came from.
If reliable and trustworthy, this could solve the mystery!
