I am researching the two Abner Johnson Holcomb's of Gallia County, Ohio.To say I am somewhat confused as to the parents of both these individuals, their wives, and children is putting it mildly.
On the one hand, I have seen information that Abner J. Holcomb was born, according to his obituary 26 Sep 1796 in Mamakating Ulster/Orange Co, NY or born 28 Sep 1795 (tombstone calculated 79y 2m 14d), and died 1 Dec 1874 in Gallia County, Ohio. This Abner married 22 Jan 1820 Gallia, Oh, Ann Smith Holcomb (by Andrew Ewing), d/o Gen. Sam'l R. Holcomb and Sarah Ewing.
This same Abner J. Holcomb b. 1795 or '96 who married Ann Smith Holcomb was supposedly the son of Ebenezer Holcomb, Jr. b. 1765 and Margaretta [Johnson?]. His grandfather would have been Ebenezer, SR, gr-grandfather Return Holcomb b. 1710.
On the other hand, I see several Ancestry trees that say this same Abner Johnson Holcomb who married Ann Smith Holcomb was the son of Judge John Holcomb b. 1775 and Chloe Mudge... Judge John being the s/o Zephaniah Holcomb and first wife Taphena Niles.
I have a copy of the transcript of the Holcomb Bible of Robert Burgess Holcomb b. 1799, s/o Zephaniah Holcomb and Mehetible Wetmore Holcomb, and half-brother of John Holcomb b. 1775.The Bible has Abner J. Holcomb listed as being born 31 May 1795, and there is a tombstone for him in the Wilcox Cemetery, Huntington, Gallia Co., Ohio, giving his death as 1 Mar 1844.
I guess the question would be, is the Abner J. Holcomb b. 31 May 1795 d. 1844 the s/o of Zephaniah Holcomb and Mehitable Wetmore?Who did he marry?Who are his children?
BUT...several trees list THIS Abner J. Holcomb, son of Judge John as the husband of Ann Smith Holcomb who did not die until 1874!
