Can anyone provide any additional information on the family of George Hare, living in Moorefield Township, Clark County, Ohio, at the time of the 1850 census?
We are trying to learn more about an Elizabeth Harr, who married George Washington Painter in 1853 in Clark County, Ohio. The only known contemporaneous record of Elizabeth is her marriage record, which described her as "more than eighteen years of age...[and] a resident of this [Clark] county."An obituary of George identifies his first wife as "Lizzy Hore of Ohio."Their son Emanuel's obituary and death certificate report his mother was "Elizabeth Horr," and his census entries consistently show Ohio as her place of birth.Elizabeth died probably in late 1855, shortly after arriving in Illinois.According to family tradition, she was known as "Marlissa."
The best candidate seems to be an Elizabeth Hare, age 15, born in Ohio, living in the household of George Hare in Clark County's Moorefield Township (just north of Springfield) at the time of the 1850 census. This Elizabeth agrees with the age and residency stated in the marriage record, and her place of birth matches later accounts. There were, however, at least other women of marriageable age named "Elizabeth Harr," living elsewhere in Ohio in 1850.
