Hi Romalee,
I am also related to William Horton and Mary Hoyt. I know their son Walter Horton married but the wife I see is Estella (Stella) Simmons. Do you know when he was married to the wife in your research? As for Willam and Mary - their ancestors are a bit harder to trace. Mary's mother was Rhoda Knapp and her father was Steven Hoyt. Williams parents are hard to find. His middle initial is NOT "M" as some folks in their research. There are 2 William Hortons buried in Winneshiek Cty, IA - same cemetery but I am not sure how they are linked. The historical society published a centennial book that listed Rhoda Goddard (William and Mary's daughter) as the daughter of William M. Horton (the local pharmacists) which is incorrect. William M was also married but not to Mary Hoyt. When William died, Mary moved with her unmarried children to Michigan and married Reuben Holmes. Her 2 sons (William O. and Guy) married Reuben's daughters Ruth and Effie. Effie is my grandmother and this information may be verified in the Shiawassee County Historybook that is readily available - even on line. You would need to search for Reuben J. Holmes (Mary Hoyt Horton) was his 3rd wife. That history said that Mary came back to visit a sister who lived in Michigan, met and married Reuben and stayed. Reuben and Mary are buried in the cemetery at New Lothrup, MI. I have found many Hortons in New York but have not been able to positively identify William there. If I can find their marriage notation, that might help.
