Hi Sarah
Unfortunately, my knowledge of the Hoskin side of my family is pretty scant. This is my father's line, his mother's name was Gladys Hoskin and her mother came from England - her maiden name was Mary Ann Levett. Her mother had come to NZ with five daughters - Mary Ann was born in England in East London, but the subsequent daughters were born in Canada, America and then the last one was born in New Plymouth. The mystery to me was that I can't find any record of a Mr Levett - and no record of any ship carrying them to NZ.The last daughter was born in NZ in 1881.From this I guess Mr Levett was still around.....The family obviously settled there and Mary Ann must have met her husband Richard Hoskin there.
I have a very old diary that mentions some of the Hoskin names and from this is the father, Richard Hoskin who was aged 44 when my grandmother Gladys was born.Gladys was born in 1899 in Paeroa - so this arm of the Hoskin family must have left New Plymouth.Again my grandmother came from a family of all girls so the Hoskin name died out on this side of my family.
However, in the diary there is mention that the Hoskins in New Plymouth seemed to buy in lots of granite and stone and my father tells me that they were grave stone engravers! They were also horse trainers and very much into the racing world.
There is a mention of a brother Josiah. Also in my family vague history, there is some debate that my great grandmother Mary Ann, for some reason remarried - maybe my great grandfather Richard died? But the confusion is that apparently she remarried another Hoskin - I can't clarify this - as my father is a bit confused about it and thinks that she may have remarried a 'Hosking'.However, the gravestone of my great grandmother, which is in the Hillsborough cemetry - reads Hoskin.
There is mention of a 'trooper' Hoskin : These were the only other notes I could get from the diary:
TROOPER HOSKIN – 18TH REINFORCEMENT TAUKIRNIKAW – MS GADSBY,MARRIED MR BROOKE 13 APRILMR CHELTENHAM
OTHER NOTES:ERLE’S GRANDMOTHER MARRIED 2 MR HOSKIN’S
THE LEVETT FAMILY APPEARED TO BE EMPLOYED IN THE TOMBSTONE BUSINESS
That is the sum total of what I know.
I didn't grow up knowing any of the Hoskin aunts as most had died by the time I was about 5 and my father didn't keep contact with any.He was fostered out to various aunts through his life so he has talked of some but I have no contact with any distant second cousins etc.The only one I have had any contact with is a son from one aunt - aunt Gertrude - and he is an actor in Australia and also interested in his family background.
This Hoskin family, I think is very large but also hard to track. They seem to have come out to NZ very early.I found the names of what I think were the original family arriving on the Amelia Thompson on 3rd September, 1841. I haven't quite confirmed that these were the definite ancestors of Richard but these are the only Hoskins I can find arriving early enough for him to have been born in New Plymouth.
This was the passenger list:

Maybe this will give you a little more to go on.I am not a lot of help, I know. But this family seems hard to trace.
I think being connected to family is a good feeling.I have almost no family so tracing these ancestors gives me a sense of 'belonging', so welcome to my family Sarah.
