I am curious how old Charlotte was in 1854, and what year she was born? I assume she is the one who married in Paddington in 1869, which I estimate puts her birth around 1840-45ish (give or take). The John I am looking at was born around 1815-1816, so is certainly a possibility of being her father.
At this stage, I have no information as to when (or from where) this John came to Australia. My relationship to this line is as follows: William Arthur Gilbert Elyard (my g-g-grandfather) married Martha Jane Hovenden nee Lambert, at Phillip St Presbyterian Church, Sydney, 28 Sep 1865. Martha had been previously married to John Hovenden, with two children: Margaret Martha Jane Hovenden (b1857 Sydney) and James Hovenden (b1862 Sydney). John died in Sydney in 1862 (BDM ref#481/1862)
Now this is where it gets a little strange - Johns death cert in 1862 gives his age as 46, so born 1815-1816. However, Martha died in WA in 1905, the WA BDM index showing her age as 62, so she was born abt 1842 (apparently in Kery, Ireland, according to death cert). This seems a VERY significant age difference, John was abt 26 yrs older than her!
Could this John Hovenden be Charlotte's father, remarrying after arrival in Australia?
I don't know if i would be able to provide much info for you, since my connection to the Hovendon/Hovenden line is not a direct one. You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
