dear mr. BROWN; Although I do not have a hard copy of what HOWDYSHELL means, I was told it was Swiss and it means - "Keeper of the Square"

After the defeat of the French 1697, the west side of the Rhine [Lorraine/Alsace,etc] was anexed to the Germans, or the eualivant thereof. This area was opened to immigrantion by them & was peopled by many Swiss. the HAUDENSCHILDTs are to be found in the records of Langensoultzbach,Alsace,France.
