Sarah Vandiver was born about 1828 in South Carolina. Her family came to Cherokee County, Alabama with about 40 other families following the Rev. Whitfield Anthony, a Methodist minister. They arrived in November 1835 and settled in the Alexis community (Ebenezer Methodist Church). Sarah's parents were Ambrose Foster Vandiver and his wife, Margaret.Several descendants of Ambrose and Margaret still live in Cherokee County, AL.
Martin Baker, her second husband, was born in Haywood County, NC about 1828.I don't know when he arrived in Cherokee County, AL or exactly when they married.(I understand that early records were destroyed in a fire.)
Missouri Jane was born July 30, 1849 and died in 1926.She was raised as though she were Martin's daughter, but family legend has it that she was actually a Howeth, the daughter of her mother's first husband and that he was killed by Indians.
