COLUMBUS, OHIO-The Rev. Russell H. Hoy, 97, of Wesley GlenMethodist Retirement Center, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the retiremnet center.
He was born Nov. 28, 1904, in Carey, the sons of E. Frank and Jessie Garman Hoy.
A graduate of Bristol High School, Ohio Wesleyan University and Garrett Theiological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., he recieved an honorary degree of doctor of divinity from Ohio Wesleyan in 1949.
The rev. Hoy pastored at churches in Indiana and Ohio, was a well-known speaker throughout Ohio and chaplain at Ohio State Grange.
In 1955 he was elected to the State Board of Education and served for 12 years.
He wrote the column, "The Country Parson Ponders," for the Ohio Farmer Magazine for 46 years.
His wife, Ruth Turner Hoy, whom he married June 19, 1930, died Oct. 19, 1994.
Survivors include a son, R. David of Dublin; three daughters, Jean Youell of Dublin, Judy Elliott of Coshocton and Mary Peacock of Medina; eight grandchidlren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Robert and Ross, are deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Given-Dawson Funeral Home in Coschocton and one hour before the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday at Canal Lewisville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Canal Lewisville Cemetery.
