Your information about Hudgins/Degges is very interesting. Not only is the story about four brothers, sons of a shipbuilder in Wales, probably invented, but I cannot find a Hudgins anywhere in the old records of Wales or Liverpool. (My husband , Derek, and I have searched there in person).
On the other hand, there are several Hudgins listed on the tax rolls in Virginia in 1787, 1788 - 1790.Their first names wereRobert, William, Humphrey, and others, and they were on the tax rolls because they owned land.So they came from somewhere and they were not paupers.
The idea of someone named William Hoggon living next to a Degge in 1678 is intriguing. The two "g's" could be a soft "g" sound, and then "Hoggon" could easily become "Hudgins".Have you seen the land patent for William Hoggon?
