I didn't say that they "can't be" found, only that I had not found them... and offered the reported trip to California as a possible explanation.
Thank you for clearing this up by sharing the census entry.Clearly if the parents went to Iowa at all, it was not in 1850.This also explains why I didn't find them in Lee County.
In what township were they living in 1850?Decatur County, and notably the community of Garden Grove, was an important way station on the Mormon Trail from Lee County to Council Bluffs.The Reorganized LDS Church (name changed to the Community of Christ) has its college at Lamoni in southwestern Decatur County.
Iowa conducted a state census in 1856.I wonder whether Jacob & Elizabeth were still in Decatur at that time.
