William Hughes (Hughs/Huse/Hews) (c1810-1895) - Conecuh Co AL
Trying to determine if the William Hughes (variously spelled as Hughes, Hughs, Huse, Hews) delineated in the 1850 Conecuh Co AL census as a widower with small children (Sarah A, Susan, Nancy J., Caroline, Wm. B.) and his mother Sarah (age 70) is the same person in the 1860 census with wife Mary and children (Caroline, Andrew, Richard) and 1870 census with wife Mary J. and children (Andrew J., Richard, Margaret, Mary J., Catharine), 1880 census with wife Mary Jane and kids (Richard, Margaret, Mary, Catherine and Sally, with Andrew Hughs hh above his). Alabama Deaths and Burials [familysearch.org] notes Wm. Huse, born c.1810 SC, died 7 May 1895 Beat-?8,Evergreen, Conecuh Co., AL, marital status widowed. This seems to refer to the same William Hughes for which a William Huse (Hughes) born 1842, died 1924 in Conecuh whose parents were given as William Huse & Mary Northcutt, the younger William who seems to correspond to the Wm. B. Hughes listed in the 1850 household delineated above (though Wm. B.'s name in later documents seems to have actually been William M.).The census and other records seem to indicate that the 1850 William Hughs and 1860-1880 William Hughes are the same person and married twice. I would like to confirm this. The second wife appears to have been Mary Jane Smith (c.1830-dbtwn 1880-1900)as daughter Catharine Hughes married Adam Hammond Presley; her death record gives William Hughes & Mary J. Smith as her parents. (One of the children [Hannah] of the 1st marriage does not seem to be in the 1850 or 1860 households but was in the household of an uncle, William A. Northcutt.) I would like to hear from the descendants of the children given in the 1850-1880 households of both marriages to learn what information they might have.
