Joseph Hulse, Clan D, Clan R, Clan V; DNA Results.
Hi All;
Some time back I and others began looking at what DNA testing would tell us about the family groups and clansin the Hulse line as shown at Hulsenet.net.
The first thing we found was that some Hulse surnames had tested at Ancestry and SMGF but at that time we did not see any at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).
In the test we found two Haplogroup R1b and I1. For these two groups to be related we would need to go back around 50,000 to 60,000 years.
Clan V Meverrel Hulse descendents tested as R1b.
We also have two tests for the descendents of Joseph Hulse, one thru Henry Hulse and one thru his brother Richard. Both test match on all but one marker. Related within about 7 to 9 generations. Both are Haplogroup I1.
We also have a test of one person descended from Richard Hulse from England, Clan R. This is a perfect match to my test on 46 markers. I descend from Joseph Hulse 1756-1821.
That may sound like over 240 trees at Ancestry that have Joseph descending from Richard Hulse (Holsaert) 1730-1770 are wrong. That may be, so we had one more test of someone descended from Thomas Holsaert 1727-1804 a brother of Richard Hulse (Holsaert). That test also came back with Haplogroup I1 but there were eleven differences and the haplotype appears to be 600 to 900 years older than what the other three tests show.
While not a close match if we do not have any non-paternal events, unrecorded adoptions etc. we still have descendents of Clan D and Clan R related to each other but from a time before the start of Surnames.
The three closest matches fall in a group or clade of Haplogroup I1 known as
I1 Norse Bothnia (Finn). The name comes from the Largest database showing that the center of population of this group is the gulf of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden, and north of Denmark. In 864AD the King of Denmark sent a large army to support England in the fight against the Norse invasion. Both that group and the Norse(North men) would have had Haplogroup I1 represented in the population. That is one of a number of times this Haplogroup could have migrated to England.
So where do we go from here?
At this point we do not have a firm answer to the question of“Did Joseph Hulse descend from Clan D or clan R?” Both groups lived in the same area of Long Island and Virginia, and had a number of common names between them. They both married Woman of the samefamilies living in that area.
To Answer that will require one or two more men with an unbroken male line back to Benjamin Holsaert but not going thru Joseph Hulse to take tests. It also should have one more person descended from Richard Hulse from England to take a test to confirm the results of the first test for Clan R.
Some of us will also have an autosomal test run after the start of the new year. That may help to find family we do not have connections with but it will only go back about 5 generations.Too few generations to help much with this puzzle. The Y-DNA tests go back past the point when our ancestors came to America. For help their we may need to see if Hulse in England have gone further back and know how Richard Hulse got to England.
