1885 Jefferson County, TX, this land was awarded to the children of Wm Pelham Humphries. In 1850 his widow filed for guardianship on their children and the estate of their father... 1855 a relative filed for guardianship over the 3 minor children since their mother had also died. When the man that had taken the orphans in had died, they found that the land he had wasn't his but theirs by inheritance through their father. They sued to recover 1878. Took 7 years but after considering all facts presented from both sides, in 1885, the judge declared the land to be given back to the off spring of William Pelham Humphries. The people that had been on the property was also ordered by the court to pay for the years of use of the land to the rightful heirs. I had made a trip to TX and combed court files from several counties in search for truth for genealogy. The fact I found what the courthouse said they did not have made some people angry as it 'burst' their bubble so to speak. Didn't intent to but I was open to all facts as long as they could be proven or at least documented in some way.Too bad that his children didn't live long enough to enjoy their rightful inheritance. Amanda, Holland and Mahala, may you rest in peace. It was a long journey and I doubt it will ever be 'over'.
