I am looking for the living male descendants who carry the surname or a variant thereof,of Ebenezer Holbert Sr. (married Dorothy Browne) originally of CT, who removed to Morris Co., NJ by the 1740’s.He had sons Capt. John andEbenezer Jr., and possibly a Peter and James (although Peter and James may have been grandsons – and not sons – of Ebenezer Sr. Of Morris Co., NJ).At least Ebenezer Jr. and Capt. John removed with their families from NJ to Goshen (Orange, Co., NY) in the early 1800’s, and are found in the Census records there. Before removing to Goshen, NY, Capt. John Holbert had previously resided in Sussex Co., NJ.
This Ebenezer Holbert Sr. Of Morris Co., NJ has been attributed in many accounts as a son of a Thomas Hurlbut of CT (the Hurlbuts of CT being a distinct family from the Hulburds of CT) - but I believe this to be an error, and I believe that Ebenezer Holbert/Hulburd Sr. of Morris Co., NJ was in fact that son by that same name and age, of William Hulburd II(who married Mary Howard) of Enfield, CT, and that the reason Ebenezer removed to Morris Co., NJ (including at the date he did), was to be near his presumed older brother William Hulburd III of Mendham, NJ.
There is a DNA program already established for both the Hurlbuts and Hulburd descendants at http://hurlbutdna.pbworks.com/http://hurlbutdna.pbworks.com/, and the two distinct DNA lines of these families are already known to us.
So, I am searching for a living male descendant of the Holberts of Goshen, NY, who bears the Holbert/var. surname for simple DNA testing, to determine conclusively whether or not this line of Holberts of Goshen, NY are descended from the Hulburds of CT, or alternately from the Hurlbuts of CT.
