I am trying to locate the brother to Rebecca (Skillman) Hutcheson she was the wife of Charles. Her brother ISAAC SKILLMAN who was born on July 24, 1764. Rebecca and Isaac were the children of Christopher Skillman and Ruth Fitzrandolph.
I am trying to locate were Isaac died and how??? And were he and Lydia Lindsay got married??? I have found that in tracking one part of a family usually you find info on another.Any Hutcheson family that might know anything will be greatly appreciated.
From records Isaac Skillman took land in Siever County Tennessee in 1817, his youngest son Elijah was born in 1818. After that Isaac's widowed wife Lydia (Lindsay) Skillman remarried to John Aaron Canterbury in 1820 in Bibb County, Alabama. She had came down to Shelby County, Alabama with her father David Elijah Lindsay. Apparently Isaac died between 1817 and 1819??
Now Isaac Skillman also had another sister Asiah or Askia Skillman that married an Alexander McLaughlin in Greene County, TN. (this may have been Greene County North Carolina then??) Isaac signed her marriage bond, being the older brother and because both their parents Christopher and Ruth had passed on. It is believed that Isaac's father Christopher died about 1782 . This Asiah and husband traveled to Shelby County with family, they are buried in Leeds, AL. Did Isaac come with them and die here, did he die in Tennessee or maybe the Madison Territory??????
Isaac's father Christopher, born in 1732 is believed to have died in Bourbon Co. Kentucky about 1782. So the Skillman's had been in this area, and also Louden County Virginia. Isaac and Lydia may have gotten married in one of these places, or Greene or Siever County, TN about 1794-1799?? Their oldest son David was born in 1801. Lydia Lindsay's family (David Lindsay and Mary Casey) came out of Virginia, and it appears they migrated and traveled down with the Skillman's, Canterbury's, and Bolton's. These families came into the Old Madison Territory about 1817 -(Now Madison County, Alabama - were Huntsville is) This at one time was both in Tennessee and Alabama. David Lindsay may have gotten here about 1812? if memory serves me right. Then they came on down into Shelby County, Alabama. The old home place is just nearly in Bibb County. David and Mary are buried there, the local DAR has honored him and decorated his grave. David Lindsay fought at Valley Forge with General George Washington. After the grandparents passed the family Lydia and children moved on into the Tishomingo, MS area.
Christopher and Ruth Skillman left a great multitude of descendants all across this great land, from their many children.
Surly someone out there may have some old family pictures or stories, or records to help us. Let us all work together to solve this.
Christopher and Ruth's son Isaac Skillman and wife Lydia Lindsay goes as follows:
David Randolph Skillman, born 1801, married. Rebecca Canterbury
Christopher Skillman, born 1805, married Nancy (Bickerstaff) Wortham
Mary Polly (Skillman) Lindsay, born abt 1811, married John Jack Lindsay
James Lindsay Skillman, born 1806, married Mary Hammonds
Elizabeth Rebecca (Skillman) Bolton, born ?, married Joseph Bolton
Elijah B. Skillman, born 1818, married Martha Patsy Noble.(this is my line)
Our line from Elijah eventually wound back up in Etowah and Blount County Alabama. Some of Elijah's branch wound up in Texas and Arkansas.
If anyone is ever in Virgina, Kentucky, or Eastern TN, or close maybe you could help us try to locate some of the answers.
Thanks to everyone for all your help, a cousin- Danny J. Skillman, Altoona, Alabama,email@example.com
P.S. something I found out from a genealogist, that in the old days the Bride always got married in her home county. Thanks to this it is a good way to help narrow down research. Sadly back that far sometimes records do not exist, many were destroyed in the Civil War, and through the years many old Courthouses have burned. Causing us many Gray Hairs and sleepless nights.
