Hi, Sandra
I'm a Iemma from Brazil and I'm just starting my research. My grandfather told me that when his father came to Brazil, in the early 1900's, his last name was Emma, and so was my grandpa's last name until he was 21 years old, when he'd received a letter of the Italian Consulate, that chenged his name to Iemma.
So I believe that Emma and Iemma can have the same origin, and the research can be more dificult due to possible errors of the secretaries of the imigration service...
The most ancient register of my family that I have is Carmino Iemma, who was married to Filomena, and was my grandfather's grandfather.
Good luck with your research and Merry Christmas to you of the US!
Pedro Iemma
