My Fischer family was from Edigheim, Bavaria. I have not been able to find immigration records but family lore says that Johannes Fischer and Lena Willer were the parents of a large family which consisted mainly of boys. They came from Edigheim and on the ship, so the story goes, one of the boys fell over board.
The family story says further that my gg grandfather Jacob Fischer (listed as Jacob Joseph Fischer in the cemetery records -- Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, West Virginia) married Margaretha Seitz. Their daughters were Elizabeth "Lizzie", Mary and Caroline "Carrie". Lizzie was said to have been born in Philadelphia, but I found that her marriage information said that she was born in Pittsburgh. I found a Jacob Fischer (tailor) with wife Margaretha in the Pittsburgh census of 1850 (before Lizzie was born) with a 1 year old daughter Caroline. This may be my Jacob and Margaretha if the first daughter Caroline died after Lizzie was born, and died before Mary (the youngest daughter) was born. Children were often given the name of the deceased child of the same gender.
Both family lore and Jacob's military record says that he was born in Edigheim, Bavaria.
From census records and military records, it appears that Jacob was born about 1820.
Family lore says that the large Fischer family came over about 1835.
I have not found immigration records for either Jacob Fischer or his wife Margaretha Seitz (born in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, according to the family).
From Pomeroy, in the cavalry unit with Jacob Fischer were Adam Fischer and Leonhard Fischer. It is thought these men are of the same Fischer family from Edigheim.
Has anyone ever found birth/christening records for Edigheim that might help those of us with Edigheim roots from this time period?
