My gg-grandparents were VACHEL M. & MARTHA SMITH IJAMS (married Jan. 6, 1853 in Alcorn County, MS). Many times I have found Vachel's date of death (as result of injuries in civil war Battle of Helena, AR) listed in genealogy posted on the internet as June 4, 1864. Because the Battle of Helena was July 4, 1863, I wondered how June 4, 1864 could be correct. I sent for his military records from Arkansas History Commission, and found date of death to be August 3, 1863, after being captured by the Union and treated for gunshot wounds at hospital/church. If anyone has proof to the contrary, I would be interested in the source. Also does anyone know where Vachel is buried? I have been told in Helena, but he was sent to hospital/church in Memphis, TN for treatment, so wonder about this also.
Also I have seen VACHEL & MARTHA IJAMS children listed time and time again in internet genealogy as Charlotte, Nancy, Louise, and Marry. These are some of Vachel's siblings, not his children. His and Martha's children are as follows:
CALVIN TAYLOR IJAMS b.Feb. 22, 1856d.Feb. 2, 1934
m.MARY EMMA YOW
buried Henry Cemetery, Corinth, Alcorn County, MS
MARY CLEMENTINE IJAMS(my g-grandmother)
b.Nov. 8, 1858d.Sept. 11, 1945
m.WILLIAM WESLEY SMITH Dec. 2, 1878, Alcorn County
buried Dawson Cemetery, Dawson, Navarro County, TX
WILLIAM B. IJAMSb.May 12, 1860 d.Dec. 14, 1883
buried Mt. Carmel Methodist Church Cemetery,
Wenasoga, Alcorn County, MS
MARTHA (MATTIE) E. IJAMS b.Nov. 3, 1862 d.Aug. 19, 1944
m.JAMES H. COOKSTON Dec. 2, 1878
I think folks tend to think if they see the same dates, etc., 4 or 5 times in various posted genealogies that they must be correct and then copy them as fact without verifying them from original sources, and then the inaccuracies get perpetuated.
I have also been trying to find where MARTHA SMITH IJAMS is buried. Can anyone help with this? After Vachel died in civil war, she married a Mr. BRUNER (anyone know his name?), and had a child, JENNIE BRUNER, who was deaf.I found Martha, the 4 children listed above, and Jennie in the 1870 Alcorn County, MS, census (index lists the last name as "Brewer.") In the 1880 census, she is living with her daughter MATTIE and husband JAMES COOKSTON in Arkansas (as Brooner)(JENNIE is in census in Jackson, MS, at deaf insitute), and in 1910 census MARTHA is living with her daughter MARY CLEMENTINE and family in Dawson, Navarro County, TX. Apparently MARTHA died in 1914 while visiting from Dawson with her son and brothers in Wenasoga, Alcorn County, MS, quite unexpectedly, and was buried in the "family burial grounds." If anyone has more information on this, I would really appreciate hearing from you.
Vachel's parents, BURGESS & CATHERINE IJAMS, are buried in Mt. Carmel Methodist Church Cemetery in Wenasoga, Alcorn County, MS. I have photos of their headstones, and also other IJAMS buried there and in a couple of other cemeteries in Alcorn County. I also have photos of headstone of Burgess's father, VACHEL IJAMS (served in Revolutionary War) in Simmons Cemetery near Florence, AL (Lauderdale County).I will be glad to share these or any other information I might have.
