INGLIS Lord Justice John & Grandfather Clock Puzzle

By Karolyne Quinn October 24, 2003 at 09:19:22

Hello all,

My grandmother's mother was Marion INGLIS, born 1875 in Lanark, Scotland. My grandmother and her children and I now live in Australia. I am in London for a while and I am visiting my relations.

I went to see my second cousin (my grandma's nephew) in Aberdeen. In his beautiful home he has a very old, and very stunning grandfather clock. He received it from his father (my grandmother's brother), who had it passed to him from his mother (Marion INGLIS)when she passed.

The family story is that the clock was a wedding present from Chief Lord Justice John INGLIS, born 1810, who became Lord Glencorse, to his brother Thomas INGLIS. Now this Thomas INGLIS, born 1817 in Kilsyth, Stirling, passed the clock down to his son John INGLIS who in turn passed it on to Marion INGLIS...and so on.

The trouble we are having is that it is generally known that Lord Glencorse John INGLIS' parents were John INGLIS and Maria Maxmen PASSMORE (spelling might be a bit off). Our Thomas INGLIS, who is supposed to have been the Lord's brother had the parents John INGLIS and Janet RIED, who married in Renfrew in 1801.

Do any of these names ring any bells for anyone? And if so could you set us straight about this please? We want to know does the clock or does it not hail from Lord Glencorse John INGLIS, and was he in fact our Thomas INGLIS' brother.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Karolyne Quinn
