I included Phineas in my book of all the Iretons in Kansas and Oklahoma. Mom (Helen Hughes) grew up just east of Ark City so you must have also. Jim Hughes was her father and he lived along the Walnut River over by the cemetery.
from my Ireton newsletter volume 15, p. 15 I listed my information in part:
My records indicate P.A. Ireton, age 47, who lived in Cowley County, Kansas in 1885 near my great Grandad Jim Hughes was born in New Jersey. So two Iretons would have moved west from their New Jersey birthplace.
J.S. Ireton was born in 1821 and P.A. Ireton was born in 1838. P.A. lived in Kentucky before coming to Kansas. At least one other Ireton lived across the Ohio River in Kentucky in the early 1880s. So P.A. may have dropped down to see his relatives and settled across the river before moving to Kansas. We could probably find him in Kentucky.
My record says that Joab Ireton lived in Johnson County in 1880 with his family. I do not have that census in front of me, but will look tomorrow. P.A. died may 14, 1896. Perhaps if I could find a death for W.C. Ireton, son of P.A. I could find an obit that would help on these folks. I may try the ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) Grand Lodge of Kansas #89 in Arkansas City for more records. Phineas A. Ireton died in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma one the above date.
Deloris responded, Thank you for all the good information.I will go back through my research records and see if I have anything on P. A. Ireton. Right now that doesn't ring a bell, but considering that Eunice died April 17, 1909 (or at least was buried at Hall's Summit, Key West Township, Cowley Co., KS), perhaps that is where other close family members were living.I will try to check that out.
Ireton news vol 15, p. 20 P.A. Ireton (probably Phineas Ireton was born in New Jersey in 1838 according to the 1885 Cowley County Kansas census. He had apparently moved from New Jersey to Iowa and then Kentucky before going to Kansas.
Ireton news vol 15, p. 30 Phineas A. Ireton We note in our book The Iretons of Kansas and Oklahoma that Phineas Ireton has a will in Oklahoma after he died May 7, 1896. We find a Phineas in Ohio census 1860 and in Genealogy.com?s World Family Tree volume 112 tree 267 in Kentucky. He apparently left Kentucky to go to Kansas, then Oklahoma. We do not have a subscription to World Family Tree and if someone does would they please look up this gentleman for the editor. That website also has marriage records (1694-1850) from England if we read the file correctly, but we once again do not have a subscription to search for Pheneas there.
As noted in our Kansas and Oklahoma book he had a wife Caroline and children.
I have a history pretty much of all the New Jersey Iretons, and Phineas just does not show up. I will keep searching and will put your interest in the March Ireton NEwsletter.
