Having read your message, your are most likely descended from Benjamin Isbell and Lettice Hickman.I can't say this with any real conviction because the paperwork information IS blurry and incomplete. And so I tread softly here. In the past, many of us with good intentions have misinterpreted information on the southern Isbell lines. Lets's just say that the circumstantial evidence suggests that you descend from Benjamin Isbell as I believe I do.
The question of who is Temple Sr.'s father is also in question, although it seems to favor one Thomas Isbell, a likely son of Benjamin Isbell and Lettice Hickman.Thomas' birthdate is suggested to be about 1757 in Virginia. His death is estimated to be between 1800 and 1810 in North Carolina.Another theory suggests Richard Isbell, a probable brother of Thomas. The fact that Richard ends up in Warren County, Kentucky, along with the other Isbells who are supposedly from Benjamin's line adds some weight, but this is by no means definite. Benjamin Isbell's father is said to be one William Isbell (who married a woman named Rosamund). William is said to be born around 1698 or 1701; something like that. Others on this forum can add or correct what I've said if they think it's necessary. But this should give you something to work with.
And it is here that I make an urgent suggestion.Do yourself a favor and take a DNA test of your Isbell male line. Why? DNA is clarifying the lines of the modern descendants of the original colonial Tidewater Virginia Isbells. By comparing your DNA results, you should be able to pinpoint other Isbells who share your DNA signature. It is then that you can compare the existing paperwork with more confidence. Only DNA testing can help answer many nagging questions as who really belongs to what Isbell line.
