That's a very good question, Zlatica!Apparently, my grandfathers' parents -- Maria (Preucil or Preucilova) and Charles (Carlos) Smrz emigrated to the U.S. from Bohemia around 1860, but I have no verification for that. That's just family lore.I do know he was born on 12/31/1843; died in Chicago: 8/6/1883.She was born 12/17/1847; died in Chicago: 5/7/1917.She's buried in St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles, Illinois.Don't know where he is.
It's also family lore that they, my great-grandparents, lived through the great Chicago Fire in 1871.They preserved their valuables by burying them before fleeing from their home.So says the story.
Their son, my grandfather, was born Francis Smrz.He changed his name to Smith sometime before my Dad was born in 1923 -- so, Smith was my maiden name.Everything, every census form, etc., I've seen for my grandfather lists "Bohemia" as ancestry.
There are quite a few Smrz's in the Wisconsin area -- my distant cousins.
As for my grandmother, Emilia Jablonski (or y?), on the 1920 census taken in Chicago where she then lived, her home of origin was listed as Hungary/Slovakia, but I don't know who actually gave that information to the census taker.Guess I'm a little bit of everything!
