I am at work on a book about Bill Jackman, an African-American baseball pitcher who was active in baseball all over New England in the 1920-1950 period, playing for the barnstorming Philadelphia (though Boston-based) Colored Giants and the Boston Royal Giants.
Jackman died in Marion, Massachusetts in 1971.
He was born in Hayes County, Texas, in either 1894 or 1897 (the 1900 census says 1894, the 1920 census says 1897). His parents names were Charles/Charlie and Betty/Bettie and they were still living in Kyle, Texas, in the 1930 US Census. Charlie was 79 years old and a custodian for the local school system.
I highly suspect, but have no confirmation, that Charles Jackman took his last name from Sidney Drake Jackman, the Confederate Civil War General, who lived in Missouri (where Charlie lists as his birthplace in various census records)prior to moving to Hayes County, Texas, after the war.
Any information of the Jackman family of Bill (William), the baseball player, would be greatly appreciated.
