My 4gr-grf John GERMAN, I, was at Fort Edward, NY, for several yr prior to 1776, where he had 100 acres of land and a good log house. He joined the British forces on Lake Champlain on 4 Nov 1776, and lost all his possessions in 1777 when his wife and children went behind the British lines.John I and his entire family resettled in ON, CAN, after the Rev. War.John I was apparently married twice. He and his 1st wife, Grace (maiden name?), had 5 children: John II, Christopher I, Jacob I, Rebecca, and Mary (my 3gr-grm, who married Solomon HARRIS, an uncle of Townsend HARRIS, the 1st US Amb. to Japan).Grace was at Quebec or Old Lorette (near Quebec) in Jan 1778 and at least until 29 Oct 1778, when John I visited her and their 5 children (3 over 10 yr old and 2 under) on leave.Grace "disappeared" bet. late 1778-1784.John I and his 2nd wife, Mary RYCKMAN, married soon after she immigrated to ON, CAN, in 1784, and they had 2 children:James and Henry.John I is believed to have been b c. 1730 in southern Germany (perhaps the Palatinate) and immigrated to British North America while young. At least some of John I's immediate descendants were Quakers, so John I may have passed through PA before settling in NY. The following dates for John I and his children put time constraints on his immigration: John I, b c. 1730 Germany; Served as Sgt. John II; b c. 1750; Served as Corp.; 1st child named Jacob Christopher I; b c. 1750; Served as Priv. Jacob I; b c. 1760; Served as drummer; 2nd child named Jacob Rebecca; b c. 1770 Mary; b c. 1774; Mary's 8th child named Jacob James; b c. 1784 Henry; b c. 1788 I suspect that John I's father's name was Jacob, because it is so prominent in this family.Any assistance or suggestions regarding John's roots in Germany or his early wanderings in America, or anything about his first wife, Grace, would be welcome.
