Okay folks, we are getting into some more notoriously *famous* people here -- they were politicians. As such, it is not hard to find stuff (excuse me, historical documentation) about them, but there is generally little mention of the wives and children.
Gershom, b 1791 , NY, was the first doctor in Springfield, Illinois, arriving in the 1820's. Gershom alsoat least dabbled in land speculation. He married Sybil Slater and had at least two children, Julia Maria (1824-1868) and William A (1826-1916).
Julia was the first wife of the controversial US Senator from Illinois, Lyman Trumbull, who served during the Civil War, and at various times, was both political ally and foe of President Lincoln. Julia was reportedly a bridesmaid for Mary Todd, but after Trumbull's defeat of Lincoln in the 1854 senatorial election, they had a noted falling out.
We know all this, but did Julia and Lyman have any children?
Dr William A Jayne, following his father's footsteps, was also in local practice in Springfield, and as such was Lincoln's personal physician before his Presidency. When Dakota Territory was created on March 2, 1861, President Buchanan signed the bill two days before his term ended. Two days after Dakota Territory was organized, Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States. He appointed his friend and family physician, Dr. William Jayne, as Governor of the territory. Governor Jayne was inaugurated on the 27th of May, 1861 at the age of 34. Dr Jayne also served briefly as Territorial Delegate to Congress, as well as several stints as Mayor of Springfield.
Did Dr Jayne marry? Did he/they have any children?
Did Gershom and Sybil have any additional children?
