Johnsonbaughs from Germany to USA
Sorry about how long this is...
My name is Raymond Pearson and I have a transcribed copy of a paper about the Johnsonbaugh family that I believe was written by Milton Godlove (son of Perry Godlove and Hannah A. Johnsonbaugh), written about 1926.In most cases the information seems to be accurate. The writer states ‘before coming to America, the original home of the Johnsonbaughs was in the province of Alsace, Germany. That part of Alsace in the vicinity of Strasbourg, Germane’.The writer also claims he ‘had an intimate acquaintance with a member of the Johnsonbaugh Family (Henry), a member whose birthday occurred on 1-14-1810’.The paper relates how a Johnsonbaugh came to America penniless and was bound out to a farmer by the captain of the ship, for a sum of money equal to the cost of his passage to America. This farmer was a brutal taskmaster from whom our ancestor took ‘French Leave’.He traveled westward and settled near Bellfonte, in Centre County, PA, here he took upon himself the name Shafer. It is here that he wooed and won his bride whom he married under the name of Shafer. At this time his name was spelled Schaefer.Later on he learned there was a small estate coming to him in Germany. He went to his old home in Germany to receive his dower, and while returning to America, he boarded a vessel which he thought would land him at the port of New York but in error he boarded the wrong ship which landed him at Philadelphia, PA.Here he was recognized by his former brutal taskmaster, who caused his arrest. How long he was detained in Philadelphia PA, our informant does not know. While here under arrest, he sent to his wife a Lutheran prayer book, a sum of money and a letter in which he told her that he had married her under an assumed name of Shafer, and that his correct name was Johnsonbaugh. It goes on to say that ‘We believe this Johnsonbaugh to have been the father of the following children.
Ione Johnsonbaugh (b. 5-24-1779, d. at the age of 70 yrs., 11 mos. and 11 days).
Catherine Johnsonbaugh (b. 2-11-1781, d. at the age of 69 yrs., 2 mos. and 24 days).
Margaret Johnsonbaugh (b. 1-18-1786, d. at the age of 61 yrs., 1 mo. and 20 days).
Susan Johnsonbaugh (b. 3-14-1789, d. at the age of 59 yrs., 0 mo. and 5 days).
Mary Johnsonbaugh (b. 4-30-1791)
Sarah Johnsonbaugh (b. 2-15-1793, d. at the age of 57 yrs., 2 mos. and 20 days).
Jacob (?) Johnsonbaugh (b. before 1787, d. abt. 1814/1815).
The writer states that the above son was believed to be named Jacob. It goes on to say that the son mentioned above was later united in marriage to Eva Schaeffer, and they had the following children.
Frederick Johnsonbaugh (added by Ray Pearson from heritagequest the 1860 census shows a Frederick Johnsonbaugh (a Distiller) 56 (b. abt. 1804), living in Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana with his wife Elizabeth 54 (b. abt. 1806) and daughter Elizabeth 22 (b. abt. 1838).
John Johnsonbaugh (b. 12-3-1806, d. 9-17-1878, age 77 yrs., 9 mos. and 14 days).
David Johnsonbaugh.
Henry Johnsonbaugh.
Susan Johnsonbaugh.
Michael Johnsonbaugh.
I have also found a George Johnsonbaugh on heritagequest who could be another son.The 1860 census shows George Johnsonbaugh (a Farmer) 50 (b. abt. 1810) living in Delaware Twp., Delaware, Indiana with his wife Sarah 39 (b. abt. 1821), daughter Mary 19 (b. abt. 1841), son Aephew (?) 17 (b. abt. 1843), son Jeremiah 15 (b. abt. 1845), daughter Julia 13 (b. abt. 1847), son George 12 (b. abt. 1848, son William 10 (b. abt. 1850), son John 7 (b. abt. 1853), daughter Sarah 5 (b. abt. 1855), son James 3 (b. abt. 1857) and son Charles 1 (b. abt. 1859).
I have also found a Thomas Johnsonbaugh on heritagequest who could be yet another son.The 1860 census shows Thomas Johnsonbaugh (a Day Laborer) 42 (b. abt.1818), living in Harris Twp. Centre, Pennsylvania with his wife Mary 38 (b. abt. 1822), son Alexander 17 (b. abt. 1843), son Edward 5 (b. abt. 1855) and son Roland (?) 3 (b. abt. 1857).
From previous posts, I believe the son born before 1787 was actually named Fredrick.Could someone verify the name Fredrick and could someone clear up the possibility of Fredrick/Jacob and Eva Schaeffer having sons named George and Thomas for me?I would also love to have any additional information on the Johnsonbaugh family.I would be more than happy to share the paper on the Johnsonbaugh family that I have (it is in a Word document) and supply any additional information I have about my family line.
